Tom Ryan, best-selling military novelist, has arranged a ride to familiarize himself with submarines. On August 10, 1991 he arrives at USS Haddock (SSN 621) as it prepares to depart San Diego for Japan. It would be a final deployment before going to the shipyard for nuclear defueling and decommissioning.
The transit is routine with plenty of opportunity for training. It doesn't stay routine when Haddock is diverted to search for three Soviet submarines that had deployed from their base. Then events in the Soviet Union result in Haddock being given unprecedented orders. As history is made in Moscow events proceed under the ocean.
Join Tom Ryan aboard Haddock and enjoy the ride.
There have been many nuclear submarine novels but, to those that have served on submarines, they are not realistic. Captain Schwartz commanded Haddock just prior to the time depicted in the novel and has tried to make the action as true to life as possible while telling an exciting story. After reading you should appreciate the challenges faced every day by the dedicated men, and now women, that serve in the Submarine Force in the United States Navy.

As a member of the very first crew of the real U.S.S. Haddock SSN 621, (aka PlankOwner) I enjoyed the book. Although it seemed to be written with a slant toward the "Nuc" point of view. From my reading it looks like that the Navy appears to be a LOT more "Politically Correct" then the Navy I served in. Not sure I would like the "new navy" as much as I did the Navy in 1968. Although I am sure much older Submarine sailors would say the same thing about the Navy I served in, which confirms we are all "boat sailors". Stephen Hawkins in the "Old Days" RM2(SS) As all Submarine Sailors will understand, the "SS" is the important part.Product details

Secret War edition by Albert Schwartz Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Wow! If you've ever wondered about the details of a nuclear sub, this is the book for you! I thought I knew about nuclear subs... now I know a great deal more! Good grief, want to peek at the control station for the reactor? I've never seen that anywhere, but he does hhere. Heck, the author goes from front to back in a detail-filled tour.
This book reminds me of a good Tom Clancy book. Sometimes he gets a bit bogged down in details, but I was loving them!
This is a real service for Cold War historians, and a fine piece of work. I recommend it with five stars!

If you want to know how things are done aboard a nuclear submarine, this is the book. The first half is really verbatim of how commands and responses are issued and acted on aboard a sub. For those of us that were aboard nuc subs it can get pretty tiring but the author is trying to give you a REAL feel for how the professional word is spoken. The real story develops mostly towards the end and is rather exciting with an unexpected ending. I mostly enjoyed the book.
As a former submarine QMOW on a Permit Class submarine, I found Secret War to be a total blast from the past to the point of making deck log entries as orders were given. This book gave a true to life feel of life on a submarine.
I sincerely hope that Captain Schwartz writes more stories about submarines. If his command style was anything like CDR Bill White, I certainly would have liked to serve under him.
The story takes place aboard Fast Attack Nuclear Submarine during the time the USSR was collapsing and just what may have been going on during that period of history. The Author Captain Albert Schwartz knows his submarines. He describes the equipment and operations so that you feel as if you are there. Like any good story about submarines he keeps you waiting for the next shoe to drop. It was a hard book to put down toward the end.
Well done Captain!
This book is a window of opportunity to observe the skipper and the crew during realistic and plausible operations of a nuclear submarine in the 90's. Look at it if you were a guest in a USN SSN, and suddenly while on a routine mission, the sub is called on a very special and realistic assignment as you are in the only sub around. For those whose don't know much about submarines, this is Groton sub school 101, for those who received the retirement papers a while ago, this is memory lane. Embrace that book it is a cool ride.
Another former submariner checking in on this book. I read Captain Schwartz's book with great anticipation and wasn't disappointed. The author uses the device of inserting a non-submariner onto the boat to allow basic explanations of the submarine's layout and operating procedures, What appears to be a routine deployment turns into something much different. Submariners will appreciate the detailed authenticity of the submarine environment, and non-quals will enjoy this glimpse of undersea warfare.
A fun read for this former ship mate of the author. At times it will seem very technical, yet that's what a fast attack is, an incredibly complex weapon.
Capt Schwartz does a great job of putting the reader into the routines while on patrol, and the adrenalin rushes all crew feel when the moment presents itself, always unexpectedly, to fight or be killed.
Life on a fast attack is difficult, for all serving. The food is great(thanks Lannie) and the friendships are life long.
This book will excite all forward and aft submarine sailors, and give a very real idea of what your sons( and now daughters) do each and every minute of a day while we enjoy our security and freedom.
Also, congrats on the twins, a few years ago I would have seen you in the nicu.
Happy reading.
