The story of a roundhouse and other poems John Masefield 9781171524922 Books

More than half of this collection is made up by "Dauber", the tale of a farm boy who wants to be a painter and who runs off to sea. He is the ship's painter and lampman, nicknamed "Dauber". As an "idler", (non-sailor), he bunks in the roundhouse with the other non-sailors, (cook, carpenter, and son on). The trip is a treacherous one around the Cape, and Dauber is called upon to throw off the taunts directed to him as an idler, ("...being neither man nor seaman..."), and prove his worth as a sailor.

The balance of the book is taken up by a selection of other Masefield shorter poems, most with a sailing subject.

"Dauber" really is a very sound example of Masefield's work and a nice choice if you would like to get a feel for his poems. The character study of Dauber is very generous but telling; his shipmates are sketched as individual characters who develop during the course of the sail. The details and the grind of sailing a clipper ship are fascinating, (there's even a glossary of obscure nautical terms), and the storm scenes are gripping and compelling. There's also a good bit of humor and banter, which is not necessarily something you might expect from a Masefield sea epic. So, very much a rewarding read even if you don't usually do poetry or tales of sailing.
